Civics Lesson

I would have to admit that it is luck rather than skill that propels me through this life I have. Really. For instance, yesterday I woke up as usual to George Ostrum's stringy old sarcasm reading off the local police blotter and news on KOFI radio. If there is a single man on this planet who is more perfect and infallible than dear leader George Bush, it would be George Ostrum.

I might not have understood that standing up against the military occupation of your own country was a bad thing if I had not heard the word Democrats spoken with the contempt that is usually reserved for vermin during an infestation as if that was all the explanation necessary for Brian Schweitzer to speak out like this at the Western Governor's

"I'm going to stand up among a bunch of elected governors and say, 'Are we going to allow the military without a shot being fired to effectively do an end-run coup on civilian government?' " said Mr. Schweitzer, a Democrat. "We're going to have a little civics lesson for some leaders who are apparently out of touch in the military."
I wanted to thank my governor for sticking up for the Constitution and for the people of this state but I was distracted and forgot. Fortunately I was lucky enough to get on over to Factesque where eRobin had this great post with link upon link of Mick's very well reasoned articles that walk us through all the events during Katrina.

As Robin said, this is comming to a disaster near you. I don't know if my hair will ever lay flat again.

EEF on the Patriot Act Provisions

EFFector Special Action Alert, November 9, 2005 action@eff.org

LAST CHANCE TO SUPPORT PATRIOT REFORM
CALL CONGRESS NOW AND SUPPORT SENATE FIXES

Tomorrow, House and Senate members will likely be meeting to
finalize a bill renewing the USA PATRIOT Act.

We've been fighting to ensure that the extensive powers
granted by the original Act are not expanded and that
controls are placed on its misuse. The Senate version of the
reauthorization bill contains new checks and balances that
will curb the worst excesses of the Act; the House version
does not. Tomorrow?s expected "conference" between selected
Senate and House members will decide which becomes law.

This is your last chance to push for the Senate reforms to be
included in the final bill?and to call for new controls on
"National Security Letters," which the Washington Post
reported last week have been widely used to spy on ordinary
Americans.

Time is short: please call your representative and senators
now. Ask them to urge the conference members to preserve the
reforms in the Senate Bill.

Click on the link below to visit EFF's Action Center, where
you will find the phone numbers to call and suggestions on
what to tell your elected officials. It will take less than
five minutes of your day and could make all the difference.

Thanks for your help,

Don't Need No Weatherman

My definition of a Nor'easterner is somebody who will tell you all about Senator Santorum's quest to deny citizen's access to the National Weather Service without mentioning that Conrad Burns is blowing the same wind.

Voucher Mania

Double or triple the per pupil spending on the condition that it be done with vouchers? Mathew Miller is pushing it with a lot of strawman arguments in the 2% solution.

He has a plan for Social Security too. Lucky me getting to hear it on ABC news. Same shit, different name.

The Awful Truth on Willy Pete In Iraq

My machine decided to interrupt itself during this video so I can't tell you if it is really as well produced documentary to the chemical weapons we used on civillians in Iraq as I thought it might be.

What do you think?

A Perfect Storm of Absolute Horrors

Today, as I noticed that the number of the American Iraq war dead is now 2049 I discovered that the bogus pre war information George Bush was peddling wasn't just about phony Niger Uranium documents or about phony aluminum tube claims.

Today I found out that some of the lies that George Bush used to push the Iraq war that has killed tens of thousands of human beings and cost us hundreds of billions of dollars as well as our reputation in this world came about because Al-Libi was tortured until he told interrogators the Saddam and al Quaida training camp stories that the Bush administration wanted to tell us, the unwitting American public who would then deliver up the lives of our sons and daughters as well as our fortunes to battle the mirage they had created for us.

Update

Here is a snippet of a post that Larry Johnson at TPM Cafe. Read the whole thing here
.
My friends recognized correctly that their mission was to gather intelligence not create new enemies. If you inflict enough pain on someone they will give you information, but, unless you kill them, they will hold a grudge. As far as the information goes there is no guarantee it will be correct.

What real CIA field officers know from their work with actual sources is that whatever short term benefit can be derived from torture will be offset by the new enemy you have created. It is better to build a relationship of trust, no matter how painstaking, rather than gain a short term benefit that puts you on par with a Nazi concentration camp guard.

What They Do

Darryl at Grumpy Old Man summons up some righteously rude indignatiion about the seven million Americans who have gone hungry since our godly president mirculously ascended to himself to tax cutting heaven.

Now would someone out there in the asshat brigade that supports that prick in the White House please explain to me how the mightiest, richest, most powerful fucking Nation in the whole fucking wide world can have 38.2 million hungry people? And while your at it, you lot of foul Cunts, you might try and explain to me also how it is that we now have 7 million MORE starving people since that lying prick you lot look up to as God reincarnated stole the office of president. And you might just as well try to explain just how fucking important it is to continually cut taxes so this lard faced son-of-a-bitch who is making it even easier to totally eliminate the poor through hunger and simple freezing to death can get even richer.

Tax Cutting Heaven is a drug to these people; five cuts in five years. As with any other addictive drug user, you can be sure they are already scheming ways to get another fix.

Bob Geiger posts about U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg's ammendment to change the name to the “Moral Disaster of Monumental Proportion Reconciliation Act” which is how the National Council Of Churches described it pointing out that it is “contrary to all the fundamental Christian values” right before he went on to disect a few of the many bills that Democrats wanted to enter.

  • The Bankruptcy Bill
  • Minimum Wage
  • National Security
  • Veterans and First Responders

This is a fine time to revisit my friend Riggsveda's run down of rejected ammendments to the Firebombing and Loansharking Protection and Advocacy Act of 2005

  • S.AMDT 16 to protect servicemembers and vets---NO 58-38
  • S.AMDT 17 to protect the elderly---NO 59-40
  • S.AMDT 28 to protect people whose own medical problems caused their debt---NO 58-39
  • S.AMDT 29 to protect homeowners with medical debt---NO 58-39
  • S.ADMT 31 to limit the amount of interest charged to 30%---NO 74-24 (they really hated that)
  • S.AMDT 32 to protect people whose debt is incurred from being caregivers to ill/disabled family members---NO 60-37
  • S.AMDT 37 to protect people whose debt was incurred through identity theft---NO 61-37
  • S.ADMT 38 to protect people from predatory lending practices---NO 58-40
  • S.ADMT 49 to protect employees & retirees from corporate practices that rob them of their earnings/retirement savings when the business files for bankruptcy---(Say it with me now:)NO 54-40
Then there is the incomplete but expensive so called Avian Flu Plan that the States may not be able to pay for although experts and amatuers alike expressed doubts that a thousand Camels would be able to drag Mr Bush through the the eye of a needle.
